Moving to Sandy, Utah With Kids: A Parent’s Plan for School, Packing and the First Week

Moving to Sandy, Utah with kids means running two moves at once. There’s the house, with its boxes and truck and closing date. And there’s the kids’ version, which is mostly about a new school, a new bedroom and whether anyone will sit with them at lunch.

The house move gets the spreadsheets. This guide is about the second one, with the school paperwork and practical steps that make the switch easier on everyone.

Pick a Move Date With the School Calendar in Mind

If you have any say over timing, look at the school calendar before you look at moving dates. A summer move lets kids start the school year with everyone else. A mid-year move can work too, but it means joining a class already in progress, so it helps to plan the handoff with both schools.

When the date is fixed by a closing or lease, work backwards from the first day at the new school, not from moving day. Records requests and enrollment paperwork both take time, so start them early.

Enroll Before the Boxes Are Packed

Sandy is served by Canyons School District, which also covers Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale and Alta. Your home address sets your child’s boundary school, so start with the district’s Boundary Locator once you know where you’re living. Families who want a different school can apply through the district’s school choice and open enrollment process instead.

Enrollment starts online. Canyons asks new families to register through its Skyward Family Access portal, and you can set up a temporary account if you don’t have one yet. You’ll upload scanned copies of your child’s original or certified birth certificate, proof of residency and immunization records, plus unofficial transcripts from all previous schools for students in grades 9 to 12.

That proof-of-residency step can trip people up mid-move. Canyons’ new-student forms page includes a Proof of Residency Documents download, so check what it accepts against what you’ll have in hand on enrollment day.

Get the Immunization Records in Order

This is the document that’s easy to leave in a drawer at the old house. Utah’s school immunization rule ties an acceptable record to one that includes the date each vaccine was given, verified by a licensed health care provider, a pharmacist or another authorized official.

So a loose handwritten list won’t do. Ask your current pediatrician’s office for an official printed record before you leave.

If something’s missing, the same rule allows conditional enrollment while the school reviews the record, or for 30 calendar days after the school provides notice. That buys time, but it’s better not to need it.

Close Out the Old School Properly

Before you leave, tell your current school the last day your child will attend and ask how they handle transferring student records. Canyons’ new-student forms page also includes a Request for Permanent Records form, so ask the new school whether you should fill it out.

Under Utah’s immunization rule, when a student leaves, the school either returns the immunization records to the parent or guardian or, if they request it, sends them to the new school with the official school record. Still, keep your own copy. That way you’re not waiting on two front offices.

Hand Off the Heavy Lifting

Parents can only be in one place at a time. If you’re the one at the school orientation, you can’t also be the one supervising the truck.

That’s where hiring movers can help. The Best of Utah moving company in Sandy offers free in-home or virtual estimates, along with packing and unpacking services that take a few days of work off your plate. If your move lands near the start of the school year, book early.

Whoever you hire, ask for a written estimate and a clear arrival window. Then plan childcare for moving day. A trusted friend or grandparent watching the kids is one less thing to manage while furniture is coming down the stairs.

Pack the Kids’ Rooms Last, Unpack Them First

Try to leave the kids’ rooms until last, so they keep one familiar space while the rest of the house turns into boxes. Then give each child an open-first box with bedding, a favorite toy, a nightlight and a change of clothes.

Older kids can pack their own boxes and label them however they like. It’s a small way to give them a say in a move they didn’t choose.

At the new house, set up beds before the kitchen. A familiar bed in an unfamiliar room can make that first night easier.

Give Them Somewhere to Go the First Weekend

Once the beds are made, get out of the house. Dimple Dell Regional Park runs east to west through Sandy’s neighborhoods, with 630 acres of natural area and more than 15 miles of trails for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. The Wrangler Trailhead has picnic tables, restrooms and a drinking fountain, which makes it an easy outing after a long week.

Walk the route to school before the first day, too. Knowing where the front door is and where pickup happens takes some of the guesswork out of that first morning.

The boxes in the garage can wait a week. The kids’ first week can’t.
